Lights and Shapes Mnemonics

Many of these mnemonics are taken from the excellent book "A Small Boat Guide to the Rules of the Road" by John Mellor.

Double Rules

Sailing Vessels

Motor Sailing shape: Cone with point down (arrow points down to the propeller)

Hovercraft and Submarines

Lights: flashing yellow (warning: things are not what they seem. One ship flies above the water, the other sinks beneath it. The slower submarine has the slower flash).

Towing

Vessel towing with length greater than 200m shape: diamond (big tow shows expensive shape).

Fishing Vessels

Trawler lights: green over white (green over white, fishing tonight.) Trawlers drag net over bottom so green equals seaweed or seabed. Trawlers fish on the move so green for go.

Other fishing vessel lights: red over white (red over white, fishing tonight.) Generally fish when stopped so red for stop.

Not Under Command

Lights: two red (too dangerous to command. Red over red, captain's dead: that is, no commander).

Restricted in Manoeuvrability

Lights: Red white red (Red When Restricted).

Pilot Boat

Lights: White above red (white over red, pilot's ahead). White hat over red face. Colours also match pilot flag.
